Wayne Rooney may miss season's start

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney faces a race to be fit for the start of the new Premier League season after suffering a hamstring injury.

The 27-year-old England star has returned home from a pre-season tour of the Far East to have the injury assessed, with United expecting Rooney to be sidelined for around a month.

A short statement from United confirmed: "Following a scan on a hamstring injury sustained in training, it has been decided that Wayne Rooney should return home immediately for further assessment and rehabilitation.

"It is anticipated he will be unavailable for selection for a month."

That makes Rooney unlikely to feature in the Community Shield against Wigan Athletic on Sunday 11th August and England's Wembley friendly against Scotland three days later.

He may also be absent when the Red Devils kick off their Premier League title defence at Swansea City on Saturday 17th August.

United are 1.66 to open with a win at the Liberty Stadium and 3.75 to have to settle for a draw, with David Moyes' men 3.25 to go on and retain the Premier League title.

Rooney himself was not too concerned by his injury, posting on Facebook: "Gutted to have picked up a niggling injury especially as training was going so well.

"Heading back to Manchester to have it assessed fully but early indications are nothing to worry about."
