Owen - Giggs will be vital on pitch

Michael Owen believes Ryan Giggs will still have a vital role to play ON the pitch for Manchester United this season, despite becoming a first-team coach at Old Trafford.
New Red Devils boss David Moyes was quick to appoint the 39-year-old to his backroom staff, along with another United old-boy in Phil Neville.

Questions have already been raised as to how Giggs will manage to continue playing effectively while juggling his new remit.

Giggs will turn 40 this November and signed a new 12-month rolling contract during the summer break.

Former United striker Owen, however, feels his old team-mate will continue to confound the critics over the coming campaign.

Owen insists: "All players slow down and find a different way of playing. He has phenomenal vision and his energy is incredible. He still hurts teams.

"It is very interesting what David Moyes has done. He has brought in his own people but he has added a touch of the old regime with the older players like Giggs and Neville. It is a clever move."

Moyes will be hoping to guide his new team to a successful defence of their Premier League title, which they are 3.25 to win. Manchester City are 3.25 and Chelsea are 3.25.

How Giggs will juggle his two roles may become clearer after the first league game against Swansea on 17th August. Manchester United are 1.66 to win, the draw is 3.75 and the Swans are 5.00 to pick up all three points.
