Fernandinho eyes European glory - UEFA Competitions

New Manchester City signing Fernandinho has challenged his team-mates to mount a bid for glory in the Champions League next season.
The 28-year-old Brazilian midfielder has plenty of experience in the competition from his time with Shakhtar Donetsk and hopes to be able to help City banish the memories of the last two seasons in Europe.

The Citizens have failed to make it out of the group stage on both occasions and Fernandinho is desperate to help improve on that record, with Manuel Pellegrini now the new manager at the Etihad Stadium.

He told the Manchester Evening News: "I hope it will be an excellent performance from City in the competition.

"That would motivate the supporters and lead us to the final games of the competition.

"A cup would be incredible and the best in Europe? I believe we can do it."

In 2011/12 the Citizens finished third in their group behind Napoli and Bayern Munich, who went on to lose to Chelsea in the final.

Twelve months later City finished bottom of Group D behind Ajax, Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund, who also reached the final, where they lost out to Bayern.

In 2013/14, City are 13.00 to win the Champions League, with Bayern Munich 4.50 to retain their title and Real Madrid 6.50 to secure a record tenth European Cup.
