Heynckes eyes era of Bayern success

Outgoing Bayern Munich head coach Jupp Heynckes believes that the club could be on the verge of a new era of success following their Champions League victory.
Arjen Robben's last-minute strike gave Bayern a 2-1 Wembley win over Borussia Dortmund, with the Bavarians having already wrapped up the Bundesliga title, while they also have a German Cup final against Stuttgart to look forward to.

Heynckes, who steps down to be replaced by Pep Guardiola once the campaign is over, said after triumph at Wembley: "My successor will be able to take over a perfectly functioning team.

"Of course Bayern Munich will have to prove they can continue to achieve these things, but possibly a new era might have begun for the club."

Heynckes was also delighted for several long-serving members of his squad, who had tasted defeat in the Champions League last year and in 2010.

He added: "Look at the generation of Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger - the time had come to win something like this.

"They've won a lot of caps and domestic trophies, but this was the first international competition."

Meanwhile, Heynckes also warned that the season is not over, with Bayern determined to complete a treble by claiming the DFB-Pokal.

With Bayern 1.083 to lift the German Cup and Stuttgart 8.00 to deny the Munich club of a treble, Heynckes added: "We can talk about it, but I would prefer to celebrate next Sunday when we have finished the job.

"That is what we will be doing."
