Emotional Muguruza to learn from Wimbledon anguish

Emotional Muguruza to learn from Wimbledon anguish

Garbine Muguruza believes she has every chance of putting the disappointment of losing the Wimbledon final to Serena Williams behind her by returning to SW19 and winning the grass-court grand slam.

The 21-year-old Spaniard was reduced to tears after Williams completed a second 'Serena Slam' - she now holds all for major titles - with a 6-4 6-4 victory on Centre Court on Saturday.

Muguruza has emerged as a surprise package over the last two weeks at the All England Club, but was unable to claim a shock win in her first grand slam final.

World number one Williams predicted that the Venezuela-born youngster will win a Wimbledon title after consigning her to defeat and Muguruza thinks she could be proved right.

When asked how it felt to hear Williams tip her to win Wimbledon, the world number 20 said: "Hopefully I can do it. I was close. It's good to hear that. I feel better now.

"I learned [from the final] that all the people are nervous, even Serena, in a final, because I saw it, and that I have a good level. I have to believe that I can be there. Here I have the proof, in Wimbledon, that I was really close."

Regarding her emotional reaction to losing, she said: "I mean, I couldn't stop crying. So many people are clapping. I don't know. I make all these people feel this in a tennis court? I was like, I don't know. I felt special.

"It's difficult to explain."

Muguruza is now determined to use the experience of Saturday's painful defeat to her advantage.

She added: "I learned that, you know, every match is very important. You know, the first rounds are really hard because you're nervous.

"If you get through all these situations and you're mentally tough, you have the chance to play like these kind of matches.

"You know, just I learned that it's so hard, a grand slam. It's like two weeks with a lot of emotion. But I am really happy."
