Djokovic 'thrilled' to retain Wimbledon title

After successfully defending his Wimbledon title on Centre Court, Novak Djokovic lauded the qualities of his beaten opponent, Roger Federer.

Djokovic overcame the legendary Swiss 7-6 (7-1) 6-7 (10-12) 6-4 6-3 in a superb final on Sunday, seeing off Federer for the second time at the All England Club in as many years to claim his ninth grand slam title and third Wimbledon triumph.

In the post-match presentation, Djokovic hailed Federer before also paying tribute to his coach Boris Becker, himself a three-time Wimbledon winner.

The Serb said: "I have to say it's always a great privilege playing against Roger, he's a great champion and one of the biggest challenges I can ever have.

"He's done so much for our sport on and off the court and he's definitely someone a lot of players from my generation looked up to and followed his lead so it's a great honour to play against him.

"He makes you push your limits, work hard and earn every single point and he's not going to hand you the match.

"For these matches you work all your life and you visualise yourself on Centre Court and holding this trophy so it's a very thrilling feeling.

"It's been a long run since we [Djokovic and Becker] started working. We managed to find the right chemistry and he's contributed a lot.

"This is his trophy as equally as mine."

Djokovic celebrated his win in customary fashion, by eating some of the grass from the court.

"It tastes very, very good this year, I don't know what the grounds people have done but they've done a great job," he said.

"It's a little tradition, as a kid I was dreaming of winning Wimbledon and doing something crazy like this."
