Facing all-conquering Serena no problem for Muguruza

Facing all-conquering Serena no problem for Muguruza

Garbine Muguruza is not fazed by the prospect of facing Serena Williams in the Wimbledon final as she intends to take heart from stunning the world number one at the 2014 French Open.

A 6-2 6-2 second-round victory at Roland Garros just over a year ago propelled Muguruza into the spotlight and she went on to reach the quarter-finals, a feat matched at this year's French Open.

Prior to the past fortnight, Venezuela-born Spaniard Muguruza had failed to progress past the second round at Wimbledon, but the 20th seed has beaten the likes of Caroline Wozniacki and Agnieszka Radwanska to reach her maiden grand slam final.

Williams - chasing her second career 'Serena Slam' - has shown signs of weakness, dropping sets against Heather Watson and Victoria Azarenka, and Muguruza hopes to make the most of any opportunities that come her way.

Reflecting on her win over Williams, Muguruza said: "It's really important because it makes you see and realise that she's also a person.  She also has feelings.  She also has nerves.

"To her, she knows that I can, you know, win against her, that I'm not afraid.

"You know, I don't think she's really used to this. Serena, she doesn't lose so many matches in the year.  I think it's important."

Muguruza's rise to sporting prominence has been rapid, the 21-year-old currently 20th in the world having been 104th at the end of 2012.

She added: "I think in tennis everything is so fast.

"It's actually true that two years ago I was not in the top 100. It's like, wow!  In so short time, I'm here.

"But it happens so many times. People, suddenly you see them in the top, you don't see them, then you see them again.

"I think sports is like this. You have to try to be more constant, you know."
