Ferrer forced to withdraw from Spain's Davis Cup squad

David Ferrer will miss Spain's Davis Cup tie against Russia due to an elbow injury.

The 33-year-old confirmed on his Twitter account that, after being tested by Spain's team doctor Angel Ruiz Cotorro, he will not be fit to feature for his country in Vladivostok on July 17-19.

New captain Conchita Martinez, who has taken over the role until the end of the year following the departure of Gala Leon, has called up Tommy Robredo as a replacement.

Ferrer's announcement should not come as a surprise, considering the same problem forced him to withdraw from Wimbledon on the eve of the tournament.

He was unable to reveal when he would be ready to return to action on the ATP Tour.

The absence of such an experienced player is a further blow for Spain, who were already unable to call upon the services of Rafael Nadal and Feliciano Lopez.

Robredo now joins Pablo Andujar, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, Marc Lopez and David Marrero in the squad for a tie that Spain need to win to secure a place back in the World Group.
