Gasquet praises Djokovic after Wimbledon defeat

Richard Gasquet paid credit to Novak Djokovic after losing in straight sets to the world number one in the semi-finals at Wimbledon.

The Frenchman saw his impressive run at SW19 come to an end on Friday, as he went down 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 6-4 to the reigning champion.

Gasquet felt the match might have been different had he been able to take the opening set on a tie-break. The pair were locked at 2-2 before Djokovic reeled off five successive points to take the set.

The Serb moved through the gears after that, allowing him to complete a comfortable victory after two hours and 21 minutes on court.

"Sometimes I did mistakes in the tie-break, of course. It was 2-2, then it was 7‑2 very fast after that," said Gasquet.

"It wasn't good. He never missed on some returns. He serves well. That's why he's number one in the world.

"It's better winning the first set. I could take confidence after that. It's tough when you are losing to the number one, 7‑6. Then he played better.

"So, yeah, the tie-break was important. But it's just one set, it's not all the match after that even if I'm winning this tie-break. It can be another match, but it's not everything."

Despite the defeat, Gasquet reflected on a successful fortnight, having reached the last four at the tournament for the second time in his career.

"I tried to be aggressive. I tried my best. I played a good match. It was tough to do better," he added.
